Any suggestions on spray painting door knobs and light fixtures?

I just bought our house and it has those ugly shiny gold knobs and fixtures and with everything else I have been upgrading it just isn't in the budget right now to replace all of them. I bought the expensive thicker rustolem hammered finnish to use on them. I also bought a sanding songe to use to ruff up the surface. Does anyone have some advice on what is the best way to do this? Any tips or tricks? Thanks for any help!

you should use a primer first. then apply a light coat of paint, let dry, lightly sand then apply a finish coat.
